MacWorld / iWorld 2013: Hoodi magnetic shade for iPad

Often times while using my iPad on location, direct sunlight makes it next to impossible to see my screen clearly. This is especially troublesome when using my iPad as a wireless field monitor. Short of hiding under a swath of black Duvetyne, I have yet to find a great solution for keeping the sun off my screen.  Until now… In just a couple weeks, a new company called HoodiVision will be releasing the Hoodi magnetic shade for iPad (with other models to follow). The $34.95 Hoodie just pops right onto your iPad using a series of magnets, and instantly shades your

MacWorld / iWorld 2013: CamRanger turns iPad or iPhone into Wireless Field Monitor

One of the questions I hear all the time is, “How can I turn my iPad or iPhone into a wireless field monitor?” Well, if you’re shooting with a Nikon or Canon DSLR, the CamRanger may be the answer. This small gizmo (about the size of a deck of cards) connects to your DSLR via USB, and creates its own ad-hoc WI-FI network. By connecting your iOS device to the CamRanger’s network, and running the free CamRanger app, you can view and change multiple camera settings (including focus) remotely. Your Apple device will also receive a live video feed from your

MacWorld / iWorld 2013: Jot Touch pressure sensitive stylus

If you’ve read my book, you know I’m a fan of the Jot stylus. It’s a great tool when storyboarding on the iPad. Rather than using the typical rubber nub, the Jot utilizes a clever clear disc that freely pivots on a tiny ball. I’d love to add a tiny-ball joke here, but I don’t have time. Now, Adonit (Jot’s developer) has upped the ante with the Jot Touch, a Bluetooth pressure sensitive stylus that kicks mountains of ass. I sat in the Adonit booth for 20 minutes, playing with the Jot Touch, and I can say with certainty that this thing

MacWorld / iWorld 2013: olloclip’s New Case

I’m a long time fan of the olloclip, the adorable multi-lens widget that slides over the corner of your iPhone, empowering your camera with wide-angle, fish-eye, and macro lenses. In addition to recently releasing a new version of this attachment for the iPhone 5’s slimmer form factor, it seems the olloclip gang has cooked up something entirely new! Check out their new iPhone case that makes it easy for olloclip owners to use their favorite lens while keeping their iPhone protected.  It even adds a shutter release and tripod mounts! The audio is a bit funky at the head of

Tiffen adds 58mm Support to their Totally Adorable Listec Promptware Teleprompter

If you’ve been lusting after Tiffen’s Listec Promptware PW-04 Teleprompter (a bite-size contraption that turns your iPhone or iPod touch  into a very portable through-the-glass prompter), but you’ve been holding off because your video camera’s lens is just too dang large… Behold! Tiffen has announced a new version that will support lens sizes up to 58mm.

New olloclip & Glif means your awesome iPhone 5 just got More Awesome!

Sure, the new iPhone looks simply fabulous since it lost all that weight. But the iPhone 5 is so thin, you might assume it’s sneaking off to the bathroom to purge after every meal (it’s not often you find eating disorder humor on a tech blog). This svelte form factor has rendered a lot of our existing 4/4S accessories utterly useless. Fortunately, two of the best filmmaking accessories have been updated to work with Apple’s new anorexic smartphone.

Only days left to support the Stabil-i iPhone Stabilizer!

I’m not sure which is crazier: The fact that it’s been over a month since my last post, or that three of my last four posts (including this one) have been about Kickstarter.com campaigns!  Without further ado, let’s get to it! The Stabil-i needs your help if it’s going to make it to the marketplace. The product’s kickstarter campaign is rapidly nearing its end, with only a few days left. To learn more about the Stabil-i, read up on its history, and to “back the project,” visit kickstarter right now. Time is running out!The team at Austin’s Dynamo Innovations Group have

Picosteady: the NEW Steadicam-like Stabilizer for iPhone

Shaky shots got you down? Sounds like you need a stabilizer! Since the iPhone line added its own digital stabilization, we’ve enjoyed a general reduction in jittery videos, but there’s just no way to get smooth footage without the addition of a stabilizing accessory. We’ve covered many on HHH, and are working with a few more for the upcoming book, but here’s a new one that looks quite promising. It’s small, versatile, and sports a moderate price tag. The Picosteady will run you $139 (plus shipping) through its Kickstarter campaign. The price will rise to $179 once its Kickstarter campaign

New on Kickstarter: Daylight Viewfinder for iPhone!

It seems like every 30 seconds, there’s another iPhone accessory launching on Kickstarter. Most are insanely silly, but every once in a while, a unique idea catches fire (the Glif is a great example). Now, Milwaukie’s Paul Anderson has introduced a Kickstarer campaign to fund his new iPhone accessory called the Daylight Viewfinder. The device attaches to your iPhones display, and allows for glare-free viewing while snapping photos, or more importantly, shooting video. The gizmo works in conjunction with a custom designed camera app. After glancing at the Kickstarter page, my first thought was “pffft.”  But, my second thought was, “Hey, wait

Gizmon releases clip-on lenses for all your iDevices

AppAdvice has a great post about three new clip-on lenses from Gizmon, including a fisheye lens ($35), a circular polarizer ($25), and something called a Three image Mirage ($25) – but should perhaps be called the Acid tab mirage. If you’re looking to add a little whiz-bang to your iFilms, check out their post!
