We’ve finished our move, and added new features!

Welcome (back) to Hand Held Hollywood. We’ve finished the move to our new servers, and given the site a fresh coat of paint. While most of the tweaks may appear to be cosmetic, we’ve made HUGE changes under the hood which should make updating the site, and adding new features significantly easier. Here’s a quick sampling of some of the changes we’ve already made: We’ve totally replaced the outdated comment system with Livefyre. You can log-in using any social network, and tag your filmmaking friends.  Comments from the old site are currently being ported over, so nothing will be lost.

HHH presentation at the DV Expo this Thursday!

The Digital Video Expo is back at the Pasadena Convention Center, and I’ve been asked to give an HHH presentation! I’ll be hitting the stage (a.k.a. slightly raised platform) on Thursday at 2pm, and will be leaving the stage 45 minutes later (or sooner if they get sick of my accidental swearing). As you might expect, I’ll be yapping about the latest production apps & accessories for your iPhone and iPad. If you’re a mobile filmmaker, you’ll totally dig it. But wait, there’s more!

Big Thanks to our Sponsors

Just wanted to take a quick moment to thank the developers that continue to sponsor Hand Held Hollywood. They are absolute rockstars! If you like HHH, and want to support us, than please support our sponsors. They truly keep the hard drives humming. MatchLens is a professional calculator for iPhone that computes equivalent lens focal lengths to produce the same field of view between two cameras with different aperture/sensor sizes. It will do a “Match Lens” calculation between your original camera’s focal length and your current camera’s focal length. Awesome! It’s also worth mentioning that MatchLens was our very first sponsor,

How I used my iPhone & iPad on a Disney short (a.k.a. Blatant Self Promotion)

I wanted to share some fun news! A short film I directed for Walt Disney Pictures just hit store shelves! It’s called Last Chance Lloyd, and stars Nicholas Braun and Raini Rodriguez. If you’ve seen Disney’s Prom (in theaters last April), then you’ve already witnessed Lloyd desperately trying to find a date for the big night. My short goes deeper into Lloyd’s story, exposes a few more failed attempts, and explains why he winds up going with… we’ll, I’m not going to spoil it. If you’d like to check it out, it’s the featured bonus on Disney’s new PROM BluRay.

It’s Time For My Monthly Update (Posted Annually)

The last two months have been non-stop insanity. I mean it! Non-Freakin-Stop…which is why I haven’t been able to post much lately. Thankfully, things are slowing down now. Aaaahhhhhh So tell me, have you seen the new Walt Disney feature film, PROM? If you haven’t, it’s probably because you’re not a 13-year-old girl. But if you are a 13-year-old girl, or you have a 13-year-old daughter, there’s a pretty decent chance you’ve just seen my work up on the big screen (I was Prom’s Second Unit Director). It’s been quite a while since I actually attended any proms, but directing

HHH heading to NAB and the SuperMeet

We’re making PB&J sandwiches, packing up the minivan, and heading to Vegas! We’re involved in two NAB events this year. First, I’ll be giving an iPad-centric presentation at the Post Pit on Monday from 3:30 to 4pm.  The Post Pit is located at the back of the lower South Hall.  SL12205.  There are a LOT of terrific speakers planning on taking the Post Pit stage throughout the expo.  Totally worth checking out the schedule. Next, HHH is hosting a vendor table at the Vegas SuperMeet!  I’ll be joined by four awesome developers, each showing their latest and greatest:

Great Mobile Filmmaking Article in March issue of L.A. Magazine

Zachary Pincus-Roth has written a terrific article for Los Angeles Magazine that explores the state of mobile technology in the entertainment business. It’s quite thorough, filled with insights from filmmakers and app developers. I think he managed to capture the excitement and resistance shared by many filmmakers. Since I was quoted a couple times in the piece, I’m hoping Los Angeles Magazine grants me reprint permissions so I can share it with you on HHH. Until then, you can find the article in the March issue now available online and on newsstands.
