PocketLD turns 2

Is that a lighting director in your pocket or are you just happy to key me? Thank you! Thank you! Try the veal! Tip your waitress! Goodnight!

With the world's greatest joke out of the way, I'm happy to tell you that version 2.0 of Zinman Software's PocketLD has just hit the app store. In a nutshell, this app helps lighting pros calculate FC/LUX and Beam/Field diameters for a ton of fixtures and lamps.  And if you understood that last sentence, I bow to your wisdom.

Version 2 adds a bunch of new features, including the ability to edit the library, create new fixtures, and organize fixtures in a favorites list.

So, if you light for a living, you should check out this upgrade pronto.

pCam on sale during Sundance Fest

Bummed you can't make it to the Sundance Film Festival? Yeah... us, too.

Well, it's time to wipe those tears away, crawl out from the shadows, and put on some clothes because I've got good news:

David Eubank, our newest sponsor, has just announced that pCam will be on sale during the Sundance Fest. He's cut $10 off the price (from $39.99 to $29.99).

If you're not familiar with pCam, it's a very powerful on-set calculator for anybody who works behind the camera.

Want to know more?  Click here to read our interview with Mark Doering-Powell, a Cinematographer who's been relying pCam for years.

CES: Tiffen's Photo FX & Cool FX Apps

Here's a pair of potentially useful filter-emulation apps from Tiffen, one of the best known companies in the photographic filter business. Each of the two apps contains a variety of digital reproductions of existing, real-world filters. You can apply one, or more, and make various adjustments along the way.

The apps only work with stills... not videos.  So, for now, they're best used as previsualization tools -- a way for directors and cinematographers to get a sense of what their final shots might look like.

At least, that's the theory....

Are there any cinematographers out there who have used these apps? To the apps accurately represent their real-life counterparts?  Let us know in the comments below!

Check out the video to learn more about the apps.

CES: The Suction Clip Can help you grab cool shots

I went to CES in search of the coolest gizmos for iPhone obsessed filmmakers...and I found plenty. But I also found something totally unexpected. A suction cup. Yes... a suction cup.

Why are you looking at me like that? Stop yelling at me!

No, it doesn't need batteries. No, it doesn't require an instruction manual. But, YES, it can help you get some mighty cool shots from your iPhone 3GS. Trust me, this thing might be one of the coolest additions to your iPhone camera rig.

Check out the video and get the skinny.

CES: Blue Updates the Mikey

Long time readers of HHH know that I'm a huge fan of Mikey, the external mic manufactured by Blue Microphones. It was even featured in one of our very first articles about performing ADR in the field.

Well, Blue is back! And they brought a whole new Mikey with 'em. Here's the short version: it looks goooood.

They've added some great features, but I'll let Blue's William Merchan tell you about 'em.  Check out the video for all the details.
