Homemade iPhone 4 Steadicam

Our friends over at Palm Sounds (an awesome site for gadget loving musicians) just turned us on to a killer video by Spencer S. Watson, demonstrating how to construct an iPhone 4 Steadicam.  I imagine it works quite nicely for the 3Gs as well.

The demo footage looks pretty swell.  It's certainly not a replacement for a multi-function grip like the Owle, and it might not be as smooth as the Steadicam Smoothie.  Rather, it looks like a terrific (and inexpensive) addition to your camera kit.  Totally worth the $30 Spencer spent to build it.

If you construct one, share your experiences and video links in the comments.

Updates a poppin'!

Greetings campers!  Here's a few recent app updates you might not be aware of.

Vintage Video Maker 1.5 - This great app for adding a old-time look to any video is now iPhone 4 friendly.

ProPrompter 1.5 - Some BIG imprvements here.  When using the app on your iPad, you can now feed live prompter video to any VGA monitor using the iPad VGA connector!  Also in this update comes the ability to edit your prompter scripts in a WYSIWYG editor mode.  This means you can edit your scripts while knowing exactly what it will look like for your talent.  That's awesome if you want to add very specific line breaks, etc. They've also addressed some bugs.  Here's a look at ProPrompter (and some related hardware) in action.

mRelease 1.0.3 - They've made it iPhone 4 friendly, and added an optional 'Witness field.  Useful, I suppose, but I'm really looking forward to editable releases.  You can read our review here.

Toland ASC Digital Assistant 1.1 - Yup, there's already update!  This new version adds high-res graphics for the iPhone Retina display.  It also squashes a few bugs and such.  You can watch an interview with the developers right here.

HHH Interviews the makers of TOLAND

Calling all DP's! Chemical Wedding has just released Toland ASC Digital Assistant ($39.00), a new iPhone film calculator unlike any calculator you've seen before.  It's totally sick.  If the Cray XT5 Supercomputer, and an Arri Elexa had a love child, my guess it would grow up to be Toland.

Unlike many other film calculators, Toland takes your entire shooting system (camera, format, lens, film stock, filters, etc.) into account when crunching your numbers.  It's not just a "how much is in focus" gizmo. No way. This thing goes WAY deeper.  So deep, in fact, that I have no clue what these guys were talking about half the time.  But then again, I'm not a DP.  But if you're a DP, you need to check out our interview with the makers of Toland.  They give a little background, and a very deep tour of the app.

mRelease keeps you legal...and covers your ass.

Now here's an app that falls squarely into the "why the hell didn't I think of that?" category.

What happens when you're shooting on location, and you suddenly remember that you left all your blank release forms at home.  Don't fret.  Thanks to mRelease from being MEdia, you'll always have four of the most common production releases (appearance, property, location, and crew) right on your iPhone.  Here's how it works:

Developer Interview: Movie*Slate 2.0

One of our favorite iPhone apps just graduated to the iPad.  Not only is it bigger, and prettier, Movie*Slate 2.0 has added some very impressive, and professional features.  Rather than just list the new bells and whistles, I decided to contact the app's author, Cliff Joyce of Pureblend Software... and let him list all the bells and whistles.

Here's what Cliff had to say.

Can you squeeze Apple's new iPhone into your Owle Bubo?

That sounded dirty.

We've discussed the Owle Bubo many times on HHH, and we still think it's the hippest accessory around. It smoothes out your iPhone 3GS footage, adds a wide angle lens, comes with a directional microphone, offers plenty of expansion possibilities, and looks cool as hell.

The iPhone 3GS slipped right into the Bubo's custom carved slot, like a hand in a glove.  But now, Apple has announced the iPhone 4. It features sharper angles, and a thinner body. Will its modified form-factor still fit properly in our existing Owle Bubos?
