Rehearsal is every Actor's new best friend

If you've seen me speak at industry events, then you already know I'm a big fan of Sotto Voce Film+Works' Rehearsal, an app that gives actors an irrefutable reason to purchase an iPad (or an iPhone).

At its core, Rehearsal is a script reading application designed specifically for actors who must memorize lines, or submit voice auditions via email. It works on iPhone, but really shines on iPad, since the screen is so much closer to the size of an actual script page. [UPDATE: Make sure to read the developer's comment below. He makes some great points about the benefits of using Rehearsal on an iPhone.]

NAB '10 - Doddle

It's 1am, you're trapped on set, and the director just called for a two-headed giraffe.  Where are you going to find one at this hour?!  Fear not!  A new company called Doddle has developed a complete production guide for your iPhone.  You can look up all kinds of production resources using a variety of search criteria.

They've got big plans for the future.  I'll let them tell you all about it.

Artemis Directors Viewfinder hits 3.0

They grow up so fast.  It seems like only five months ago, that our favorite virtual viewfinder turned 2. Oh wait... it was only five months ago! And 3.0 has already hit the app store? Yup! And it looks like the new version number is fully warranted!

This new iteration of Chemical Wedding's Artemis Directors Viewfinder adds an often requested feature: The ability to add your own cameras to the list of supported gear. Simply put, if Artemis doesn't already support your camera, you can take a few simple measurements and add the camera yourself. You can even share your results with the developers, and have your camera added to the official database.

It almost makes me want to dig into my attic, and pull out some long forgotten cameras.

If you're not familiar with Artemis, or just want to learn more about director's viewfinders in general, check out this interview we posted a while back. It was shot at the DV Expo, just prior to the release of version 1, and includes some info about their other app, Helios.

Bento is ready for iPad

Earlier this week, MacRumors reported that Bento, the much-loved database app, will be making its way to the iPad platform. If you're like me, that's spectacular news! I rely on the iPhone version of Bento, and maintain databases for Projects, Crew, Equipment, Locations, and Casting. Like Bento for the iPhone, the iPad version will operate as a stand-alone database manager, but it can also sync beautifully with the Mac version.

CES: Tiffen's Photo FX & Cool FX Apps

Here's a pair of potentially useful filter-emulation apps from Tiffen, one of the best known companies in the photographic filter business. Each of the two apps contains a variety of digital reproductions of existing, real-world filters. You can apply one, or more, and make various adjustments along the way.

The apps only work with stills... not videos.  So, for now, they're best used as previsualization tools -- a way for directors and cinematographers to get a sense of what their final shots might look like.

At least, that's the theory....

Are there any cinematographers out there who have used these apps? To the apps accurately represent their real-life counterparts?  Let us know in the comments below!

Check out the video to learn more about the apps.

Updated on Tuesday, January 12, 2010 at 11:28PM by Registered CommenterTaz Goldstein

Now here's a handy-dandy little contraption.  The iRecord Pro let's you take any incoming video signal, and record it straight to your iPhone and iPod touch.

That means you don't have to waste time encoding, copying and syncing through iTunes.  Just hit record and go.  Pretty neat!

Check out the video after the jump!
