Hitchcock gets a Makeover

Hitchcock, the insanely cool storyboard tool for iPhone, just got a new name, Cinemek Storyboard Composer.

So, why the change?

Several weeks back, Cinemek received a cease and desist order from the Hitchcock estate. Jonathan Houser, the app's designer, told us that despite the estate having no trademark on the Hitchcock name, he decided to replace the title out of respect to the late director, adding, "It was only intended as an homage."

You can find the newly branded app in the App Store.

If you'd like to learn more about Storyboard Composer's upcoming features, check out our interview with Jonathan Houser.

PROfile: Cinematographer, Mark Doering-Powell discusses pCAM Film+Digital Calculator

David Eubank has just released Version 3 of his highly regarded pCAM Film+Digital Calculator for the iPhone. If you’re not already familiar with pCAM, it's an amazingly versatile Motion Picture and Still Photography calculator. This new version introduces several additional calculations, updates the user interface, includes 26 new formats, and squashes a couple bugs.

Since I’m admittedly unqualified to discuss this amazing app, I’ve invited Emmy-nominated Cinematographer, Mark Doering-Powell to share his thoughts.

DV EXPO: iKeysToGo for Final Cut Pro 7

I admit it.  I've been using Final Cut Pro for years, and I still only know about 20 keyboard shortcuts.  Maybe 25 if I've had a Redbull. The worst part forgetting the those commands is having to look through the manual (or PDF). It's never as quick and easy as it should be. There's usually a lot of page flipping and time wasting involved.

Enter iKeysToGo: Final Cut Pro 7.  It's a searchable, well organized list of keyboard shortcuts. That might sound unimpressive for $2.99, but you'd be amazed how handy this app really is. There's a lot of time to be saved with this puppy. I'll let Diana Weynand tell you more about it.

And I'm sure this isn't what the developer wants to hear, but iKeyToGo also makes for excellent bathroom reading.  You're welcome.

DV EXPO: Autocue QTV Teleprompter

While traversing the expo isles, I came across a new handheld teleprompter from Autocue Qtv. It looks pretty solid, plays nice with your iPhone, and I'm sure it would give your on-camera talent a boost. That's the good news.  The bad news is the high price ($899). For many pros, the expense is worth it. Aaron Brady from Autocue Qtv can tell you more about it.

This is the first teleprompter hardware I've mentioned on HHH that employs beam-splitting glass (the technique used in most professional situations). If you want to learn more about this sort of teleprompter, watch the end of the video, and I'll do my best to explain.

Please excuse the picture and sound quality.

DV EXPO: Jonathan Houser, Creator of Hitchcock

It’s no secret to Hand Held Hollywood readers that I’m a huge fan of a storyboarding app named Hitchcock. And now that Apple has made it one of their 'featured' apps in the iTunes store, it's attracting many more fans every day.

While roaming the halls of the DV Expo, I was able to catch up with Hitchcock's creator, Jonathan Houser. I asked him a few questions, and even got him to fess-up about some cool new features that are coming to future versions of Hitchcock.

That's right, it's my first exclusive!

I'll be covering Hitchcock in greater detail down the road, but until then, check out the intro video on Cinemek's homepage.

There are a couple more DV Expo videos left.  Stay tuned.

DV EXPO: Helios & Artemis

Nic Sadler and Toby Evetts of Chemical Wedding are already quite well know because of their amazing iPhone sun position calculator, Helios. I'm planning on covering the app very soon... but it may have to wait a bit. Why? Because these guys are about to release what may be one the niftiest filmmaking apps yet. It's called Artemis (the Director's Viewfinder). I'll let them explain. It's currently under review at Apple, and should be hitting the app store in a week or two.

If you don't know what a director's viewfinder is, keep watching until the end of the video. I'll do my best to explain what they're all about.

Once again, sorry about the sub-par audio. It was mighty loud in there.
