Homemade iPhone 4 Steadicam

Our friends over at Palm Sounds (an awesome site for gadget loving musicians) just turned us on to a killer video by Spencer S. Watson, demonstrating how to construct an iPhone 4 Steadicam.  I imagine it works quite nicely for the 3Gs as well.

The demo footage looks pretty swell.  It's certainly not a replacement for a multi-function grip like the Owle, and it might not be as smooth as the Steadicam Smoothie.  Rather, it looks like a terrific (and inexpensive) addition to your camera kit.  Totally worth the $30 Spencer spent to build it.

If you construct one, share your experiences and video links in the comments.

Can you squeeze Apple's new iPhone into your Owle Bubo?

That sounded dirty.

We've discussed the Owle Bubo many times on HHH, and we still think it's the hippest accessory around. It smoothes out your iPhone 3GS footage, adds a wide angle lens, comes with a directional microphone, offers plenty of expansion possibilities, and looks cool as hell.

The iPhone 3GS slipped right into the Bubo's custom carved slot, like a hand in a glove.  But now, Apple has announced the iPhone 4. It features sharper angles, and a thinner body. Will its modified form-factor still fit properly in our existing Owle Bubos?

Students review the Steadicam Smoothee

In January of this year, HHH posted a story about Tiffen's Steadicam Smoothee -- a nifty looking camera stabilizer for your iPhone 3GS. We were only able to play with it for a few minutes, so we couldn't conduct any proper tests. But thankfully, one of our readers has just contributed a full review.

Bart Weiss teaches Video for iPhone at the University of Texas at Arlington.  We met during NAB a few weeks ago.  He and his students were recently given a Smoothee demo unit.  After putting it through its paces, they submitted this report.  Our thanks to Bart and his team of student media-makers!

NAB '10 - WristShot

If you've got an OWLE or a DSLR, you might want to check out the new WristShot from Hoodman.  It mounts your camera right on your arm, which helps keep your footage steady, and allows you to relax between shots without dropping your gear.

And as an added benefit, it makes you look like Robocop. Isn't that nice?

NAB '10 - iPixPanel

Broadcast Pix has developed an iPad app called iPixPanel that can replace thousands of dollars worth of equipment. It's another terrific example of the iPad being used to virtualize existing hardware, a trend I'm sure will continue in the future!

NAB '10 - ProPrompter HDi

Another tradeshow, another pair of wicked-cool announcements from Bodelin, the company behind ProPrompter, the current champ of teleprompting apps.

First off, the ProPrompter app now supports two types of syncing, making remote control and multi-camera shoots a breeze.  Secondly, Bodelin was showing off their new ProPrompter HDi which turns your shiny new iPad into the ultimate through-the-lens teleprompter.

Don't understand?  Watch the video, and you will!
