I’m looking to hook up an external XLR microphone to the Iphone… Any thoughts on adaptors for this? It seems people all over the web are looking for the same thing.
Such as this self powered mic:

Or a typical Shure sm57:

I would assume we need an XLR>Minipin adaptor, but not sure of line level, etc.
TIA!

They also make any cable custom, just email them!

Actulaly, you may want to consider using a "Zoom" for recording multitrack audio via it's built-in mics and XLR inputs. Then, you bring it into your post editing system and synch to the video you shot in the iphone using Plural eyes from Singular Software. A lot of folks are doing this with the DSLR cameras… why not take a page from their book.

This is the best for XLR to iPhone. These guys are great, and have it dialed. Don't get the wrong adapter, get this one:

The KVConnection cable mentioned above, or at least the one that I bought from them that looks just like that one, did not work with iphone 4. I emailed that fact to the KV people and got a response the next day asking me to try certain things as a test. They explained that part of the problem had to do with the output from the Rode NTG-2 mic I use being less than what iphone 4 requires to switch off the internal mic and use an external. I reported what I found after testing to them and they responded by offering to send a test cable they were working on. I received that cable just two days later and I am happy to report it works perfectly. Not only that, they made the cable longer on an offhanded comment I made regarding length. That is FANTASTIC service! They definitely have earned my repeat business and my highest recommendation.

OfflineHere's a very nice source for information, including some comparative testing.

The VeriCorder XLR Adapter contains a pre-amplifier that provides 6.1dB gain, with
a very flat response from 20Hz to 20,000Hz. It was specifically designed to interface
dynamic microphones, or self-powered condenser microphones, to the iPhone
headset jack. It can also be used to connect the iPhone to a mixer output, or patch
panel, if the output voltage is set for microphone levels.
A number of other products on the market either use a simple resistor network to
change the impedance seen by the iPhone headset circuitry, or provide a direct
wire coupling of the dynamic mic to the iPhone. Both of these approaches result
in a less than optimal audio feed, and result in higher than necessary noise.

This looks pretty cool. Check out the frequency response:
