A while back, HHH published a List of Lists (in list form) -- a collection links to lists of iPhone Apps for Filmmakers. We found a lot of lists! While each list contained some good info, none of them contained all the information out there. We received MANY emails suggesting that we create our own list, bringing all the apps together in one place. We loved the idea. But rather than creating just another list (albeit, a longer one), we chose to build a directory that will grow along with the hand-held industry.  We wanted to create a unified catalog of iPhone apps and accessories, that could easily be expanded to include Apple's new iPad, Android Apps, WebOS Apps, Windows Mobile Apps and Web Apps.  In essence, we wanted to create the ultimate Directory! ...at least, that's what we're shooting for.

Big thanks go out to all the list makers out there.  If it weren't for your app obsessions, we never would have been inspired to join your ranks.

The biggest hurdle we faced was our complete and total lack of PHP and MySQL experience (two things needed to get the HHH Directory off the ground). We read a few books, and made a lot of mistakes. We think we've got it all ironed out... but if you find a glitch, please let us know.

We found ourselves unable to conquer one significant issue: SquareSpace (the platform that hosts Hand Held Hollywood) does not allow PHP scripting. So, our only solution was to put the PHP generated pages inside iFrames, which simply means the viewing experience isn't quite as seamless as we'd like.  We're hoping SquareSpace changes the policy for their next major upgrade.  In the meantime, we're open to technical suggestions.

We've tried to catch all the bugs, typos, and broken links.  But, if you find any, please let us know.

Right now, the Directory is updated by hand.  Not only does this take a long time to maintain, but it also delays updates. We're actively working to automate the Directory, so new apps are available sooner, and the descriptions always reflect the latest updates.  We'll keep you posted.   

One of the ways niche sites like ours manage to pay the bills is by using affiliate links. Simply put, if you click on a store button (i.e. iTunes App Store, Android App Market, Palm App Catalog, etc.), and then choose to make a purchase, HHH will get a few cents for the referral. It doesn't effect you, or your price you pay. But it does help support our site, and keep the hard drives humming.  We use these links around the site, not just in the Directory. Our first order of business is to make the directory easily accessible from iPhones, and other hand held gizmos. Most of the hard work is done. Now it's just a matter of reformatting everything for smaller screen. We're also working on a search function, so you can easily find a specific app. 

As more hand-held devices find their way into our hands, we plan on expanding the HHH Directory with additional categories and features. If you have any suggestions, or find any mistakes, please feel free to drop us a line.
